I'm starting this page, January 10, 2008.  These are scanned in images of things I have found in books.  Please see also, the page, "Stuff Found in 'Moore's Universal Assistant'".  The page, "Interesting outline found in 'Chief Modern Poets of England and America'" is related to this one as well.  If I am violating your copyright, or otherwise using your image unauthorized, let me know which image(s) you want removed.  I will remove any image that is inappropriate.  As a, "general rule", you can click on the images below in order to get a larger view of a particular image. If you click on an image and nothing happens, this means I didn't set up that one to enlarge.

July 5, 2008 I found a "Victorian" scrapbook on eBay.  It arrived while I was away on a vacation. There is some "modern" hand written text after the "Victorian" parts. I write about some things I have learned about the book.  You can view the page here.

Found in, "Modern Practical Design", G. Woolliscroft Rhead.

Found in "The Holy Scriptures"...

I bought a Hebrew (Jewish) Bible in English.  I got it via an eBay seller in Virginia.  It seems like a book with a very interesting history.  I wonder how it happened to travel from New York to Virginia. I have scanned in the inscription and what was written in the "family record" at the back of the book.  I

also include the title page, copyright info. and the index.
In the index, the names that seem strange to Christian eyes, are the Hebrew names for the sections of the various Biblical books.  Debarim (255) is the beginning of Deuteronomy.  Page 313 starts the book of Joshua.  The books are in a different order than how our "Old Testament" is also.  I just found and added two more images.  They are a page from an "old" book.  I believe I found it in Ezekiel between pages 752 and 753.  (Ezekiel 10 and 11)  This page might be from a
"Concise Oxford Dictionary" of around 1924, but I'm not sure exactly.  It does seem to come from a dictionary of some sort.
(Just click on the eight images in order to see full screen versions of them.)

Uncle Vanya Postcard...

This wasn't found in a book.  I bought it off eBay.  But since I give it such a "write up" on the "Writing About Books" page, here is a picture of it.  If I am violating your copyright, let me know and I will remove this imageThanks

The postcard is an image from the first (1899) production of Uncle Vanya („Дядя Ваня” [Dyadya Vanya] ).  It is at the Moscow Art Theatre in Moscow.

I include a copy of the envelope because the stamps are incredible. I especially like looking at the Estonian clothing in the top set of stamps.  The postcard came from Estonia.  Eesti is Estonia in Estonian (obviously).  The seller wrote, "Dear Robyn! Thank you for bidding! Please find the items eBay # One old PC--Theatre, Russia.  Our deal was pleasure for me! Positive feedback will follow! Snowy greetings from Estonia! My thanks and best regards." It is always nice to get postal mail from far away places!!

As usual, click on the images to make them larger.

Found in "A New Greek English Lexicon to the New Testament"...

I scanned in the inscription from this book.  I include the book plate also found inside.  I scanned in the title page and I stuck on that image the text found on the obverse (other side of the title page)

The book plate is signed, "James D. Reid -- '45".  He also signs his name in Greek.  He is evidently the first owner of the book.  But how did it come to be given by someone else as a "sin offering", in 1957? Why was it a "sin offering"?  Did the giver commit a sin against the person he gave the book to?  Was the sin offering a religious ceremony that was done at a time of the year, like Lent?  Who were these people?  I assume they were men. Were they priests or religious men of some sort? (priests, monks or other clergy) Can you help me make out their names?  It is difficult to read the handwriting. Any help will be appreciated.

Here is my attempt to decipher the names... (underlined letters are letters I have questions about.)

P.M., Corsa, B.S., B.D. ? ~~~  P.M., Covoa ?    3/1/57  to R.J. Yorckman, S.J.~
                                                                                              =
R.J. Yo_chman ?   R.J. Yonchman, S.J.

Found in "Practice Book In English Composition" by Alfred M. Hitchcock...

I guess this entry should be wearing some green. Ha!  Ok.  This entry is NOT a Nazi item.  It is from W.W. I era.  I found this sticker advertising, "The Fatherland", inside this English Composition book.  I originally thought it was Nazi.  Now I know it isn't.    Here's the Wikipedia article about, "The Fatherland".  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fatherland

I am not saying that I agree with the sentiments of this sticker or, "The Fatherland", publication. I just have this on here for the "history".

As usual you can click on the images below in order to view a larger version.

The Fatherland sticker found inside the front cover.

Found in "How To Write For Radio" by James Whipple...

I got this book from eBay.  When I opened up the front cover, I found an envelope full of, advertisements, brochures, reply envelopes etc. They were advertising a free membership to the D.O.D.B.C.  The, "Doubleday One Dollar Book Club".  The brochure advertises a set of books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  "Beautiful NEW Popular Edition Made from the Identical Plates of the De Luxe CROWBOROUGH Edition".  "For the first Time in Publishing History--- A uniform Library Edition of Conan Doyle Mysteries Printed from the De Luxe Plates and at a Popular Price...".

This looks to be in pristine condition except for a small tear on the initial envelope.  It may have been opened once to look at the contents. It could be that until I opened the contents and read them, no one had.

The eagle and NRA logo, indicate that this is from the 1930's.  NRA is the National Recovery Act.  It was part of Franklin Roosevelt's famous New Deal "alphabet soup" agencies.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Recovery_Act   The book, "How To Write For Radio", was copyright, 1938.  "Sec. 4351/2 P. L. & R.", on the envelope means that it is a "precancled envelope".  "Pull Out End Flap For Postal Inspection"--- the top flap of the outer envelope was only gummed on one side.  One of the other flaps of the envelope was not glued. This was done so that the envelope could be easily opened for postal inspection.
